About Us

Benya Lighting Design is an independent, fee-based lighting and daylighting consulting firm with a broad national and international practice. Our work includes both residential and commercial lighting design.  We observe strict ethical standards and provide our clients with unbiased, professional services. We do not sell or install lighting equipment.  We maintain current professional registrations, certifications and insurance. 

We were founded by Principal James Benya in Marin County, CA in 1994.  We relocated to metropolitan Portland, OR in 1995. Our work includes local, regional, national and international commissions.  Prior to Benya Lighting Design, Jim was CEO and Managing Principal of Luminae Souter Lighting Design in San Francisco and Honolulu.

For commercial projects, our clients are primarily architects, interior designers, and electrical engineers.  We typically work as part of the traditional A/E design team, but we also have extensive experience in design-build and in working for developers and corporations,

For residential projects, our clients include homeowners, architects, interior designers, contractors and developers.  Our extensive experience in electrical engineering and communications systems allows us to help integrate lighting and lighting controls with home theater and automation systems.
